Roho ya Selous sits on a small peninsula that offers stunning views of Lake Nzerakera and is in the heart of Nyerere National Park‘s core game viewing area. This area, previously known as the Selous Game Reserve, is one of the largest protected spaces in Africa and is home to a significant population of wild dog. We provide a comfortable home-like experience just a short distance from a palm-fringed tributary of Tanzania’s Rufiji River, where boating and walking adventures add additional layers of excitement to this classic safari experience. The area is teeming with incredible wildlife, such as lion, elephant, giraffe, and more.

On a small peninsula overlooking Lake Nzerakera, Roho ya Selous is in the heart of Nyerere National Park formerly Selous Game Reserve, the largest reserve in Africa and home to one of the biggest populations of wild dogs on the continent. It is a wildlife hotspot, with giraffes and elephants regularly sauntering through camp during the day and the sounds of nearby hippos and lions punctuating the night. With its network of lakes and rivers, this area is known for its water-based activities. Our eight-tent camp is simple and stylish, with evening-breeze cooling systems above the beds making even the hottest nights more comfortable. During the day, cool off in the pool or spot wildlife making its way to the water from an armchair in our shaded dining tent or lounge area. Out and about, explore by vehicle, on foot or even in a boat, with fishing excursions available.

Our stretch canvas tents, designed with en suite bathrooms and both indoor and outdoor showers, offer excellent privacy and comfort. The ‘evening breeze’ cooling system, positioned over the bed, ensures you enjoy a soothing and relaxing sleep, especially during hot months. Savour the serene views of the wildlife surrounding the lake from our canvas-roofed dining and lounge areas that remain cool throughout the day thanks to their slate flooring. The swimming pool provides welcome relief from the afternoon heat, or a refreshing cool off after a walking safari. In the evenings, gather around the fire for sundowner drinks while listening to the grunts of nearby hippo.

The landscapes are unlike the grassy savannahs of northern Tanzania, but instead offer a marshy terrain with palm trees, lakes, and rivers, with seasonal wetland plains on the periphery. This stunning habitat is home to elephant, buffalo, lion, hippo, leopard, and one of the most significant populations of wild dog. Wildlife is abundant close to the camp due to its proximity to the water, especially during the dry season months. Bird safari enthusiasts can spot over 400 recorded species, including the frequently seen Pel’s fishing owl. Nyerere offers excellent game viewing combined with unique water-based activities and, with far fewer visitors than the busy northern parks, there is always a strong sense of exclusivity to the experience.
